CCTV System Planner

Answer five short questions to get a rule-based starting recommendation. Your choices stay in this browser and help prepare an assessment request.

Step 1 of 5
What do you want to protect?

Preliminary guide only. Final camera count, lens, placement, equipment and recording plan require a site and network assessment.

CCTV Storage & Bandwidth Calculator

Estimate recording capacity from bitrate and recording time. Actual usage varies with scene motion, image detail, frame rate and camera settings.

Starting bitrate estimates at 15 fps: 2MP 2 Mbps, 4MP 4 Mbps, 5MP 5 Mbps, 8MP 8 Mbps with H.265. H.264 preset is 1.5×. Adjust bitrate to match camera and scene. Enter expected recording hours/day above; event recording varies with activity.

Estimated storage including 10% allowance

—

Aggregate camera stream bandwidth — (plus 15% planning margin).

How the estimates work

Storage

Storage ≈ camera count × bitrate × recording seconds ÷ 8, converted to decimal GB/TB and increased by 10% for container/overhead allowance. Motion recording may use less but depends on activity and configuration.

Example: six cameras at 4 Mbps each, 24 hours/day for 30 days use about 7.8 TB before allowance, about 8.6 TB with it. Confirm usable recorder capacity, retention and any redundancy before selecting disks.

Bandwidth

Camera count × per-camera bitrate, with 15% planning margin. Live viewing, playback, Wi-Fi links and other traffic need separate consideration. Review PoE capacity, switch uplinks, cable routes, segmentation and remote upload capacity.

Choose a CCTV system around the site

IP cameras with PoE

IP cameras send digital video over a network. Power over Ethernet can carry power and data on suitable cabling. An NVR records video. It can be a flexible starting point for a new system when the network and site support it.

Analog HD with DVR

Analog HD cameras connect to a DVR over compatible coax. Reusing existing cabling may be practical, but compatibility, cable condition and image goals need checking.

Wi-Fi cameras

Wi-Fi reduces some cable runs but still needs reliable power and wireless coverage. Congestion and interference can limit suitability for critical or multi-camera deployments.

Resolution, lens & lighting

More pixels do not guarantee identification. Scene width, lens angle, mounting height, distance, lighting, motion and evidence goals determine useful detail. Higher resolution can increase storage and bandwidth.

Compatibility and suitability depend on equipment models and the site. Existing cameras or recorders should be checked before reuse.

CCTV networking and cybersecurity

A camera system is part of your IT environment. Plan for secure setup alongside video coverage.

  • Change default credentials and use unique, strong passwords.
  • Use a controlled network segment where the design supports it.
  • Limit access to authorized users and use multifactor authentication when supported.
  • Update firmware through vendor-supported processes and retire unsupported devices.
  • Prefer secure remote access; avoid unnecessary direct internet exposure or port forwarding.
  • Review logs, time synchronization, physical recorder security and export procedures.
  • Set retention and access rules to suit privacy, workplace and local legal obligations.

Never share camera, recorder or router passwords in this planner or an assessment request. Credentials are not needed for this preliminary estimate.

From assessment to installation

  1. Understand goals: review risks, lighting and the detail needed in each scene.
  2. Survey coverage: check positions, blind spots, mounting, weather exposure and cable routes.
  3. Design: select compatible cameras, lenses, recorder, storage, PoE/network capacity and retention.
  4. Install and configure: mount equipment, secure access, set recording and verify coverage.
  5. Handover: explain access, retention, operation and maintenance options.

What affects installation cost?

We do not publish an unverified price. Scope depends on camera quantity and type, lens/night performance, cable distance and pathway, access conditions, recorder and usable storage, network/PoE upgrades, configuration and support. Request an assessment for a site-specific proposal.

CCTV installation questions

How many CCTV cameras do I need?

It depends on coverage goals, scene width, sightlines, lens, mounting height, lighting and obstacles. This planner gives a broad starting range; a site assessment confirms the layout.

Should I choose IP or analog CCTV?

IP/PoE is often a flexible starting point for a new networked system. A compatible analog HD/DVR system may suit upgrades that reuse coax. The site and equipment compatibility should decide.

How much CCTV storage do I need?

Storage depends on camera count, bitrate, codec, frame rate, recording hours and retention. Use the estimate as a starting point and confirm usable capacity and redundancy.

Does higher resolution always mean better security?

No. More detail can increase storage and bandwidth. Lens, distance, lighting, motion and the identification goal matter too.

Can I view cameras remotely?

Remote viewing may be configured when equipment and connectivity support it. Use secure vendor-supported access, unique credentials, limited permissions and current firmware.

Can existing cameras or cabling be reused?

Sometimes. Formats, cable condition, connectors, power and image requirements must be checked first.

Do you install CCTV in my area?

Contact SAM Solutions with your location and project details to confirm availability. This page does not assume a service area.

How do I request an assessment?

Share property type, coverage goals and existing infrastructure. Do not send passwords or private access credentials.

Discuss your CCTV project with SAM Solutions

Share your property type, coverage priorities and existing infrastructure. A technical assessment can confirm camera positions, equipment, storage and network requirements.
