How to Prepare for Remote IT Support

Collect the right information and retain control of access.

Start with a clear problem description

Record what is failing, when it started and how it affects work. Note the device, application and any visible error. If several people are affected, say so. Avoid sending screenshots that expose private messages, customer records or authentication information.

Prepare for the session

  1. Confirm the scope and any charges with the support provider.
  2. Arrange a suitable time and keep the affected device available.
  3. Ensure a working connection where remote access is required.
  4. Close unrelated confidential documents and applications.
  5. Approve only the access needed for the agreed work.
  6. Review the outcome and confirm the session ends.

Keep credentials private

Do not send your password or one-time codes in chat or email. Enter sign-in information yourself when needed. Ask what access is required and how it will be ended.
